Mullein
Torch-bearing in September!
If we're connected on Instagram you will already know I am learning as much as I can about the plants and especially the wildflowers in my square mile.....Here I want to go deeper into all I'm learning about them.
This is dark mullein! I met him for the first time yesterday and he’s a fascinating being. I’m experiencing his energy as male and almost everywhere I looked for meaning, there was a strong affinity with solar energy.
Sometimes it takes mullein as long as seven years to flower; up until then he is putting all his resource into the clumpy floret of leaves at his base, which is a very good way of building resources and staking ground. Then, when he flowers, he puts everything into a vertical blaze of glory! Strong seeds are scattered, and the flower head eventually dries into a ropey kind of seedhead, which, dipped in tallow, was historically used as a torch to both ward away evil, and worship the sun. All a bit phallic really too!
Up close, his stamens are covered with fluffy plummy coloured hairs, with an orange middle. Really lovely!
Later on yesterday, I was working in deep SoulCollage® creative space with a friend who made his first collage containing his first neter - an image of the Egyptian god Amun-Ra. His collage is personal to him but the thread of connection felt very meaningful to me. I found an image of him to share here. A sun God with an immense golden head dress. So this all felt very synchronous.
Of course this is not to say I have the last word on the energetic principles expressed in wildflowers! Just that yesterday felt like a beautiful re-sourcing thread of intutive wisdom running through the day. Indeed, for a beautiful feminine envisioning of this flower, look up the gorgeous mullein flower fairy painted by Paulina Kourkova from Czechia.
